Grade 8 Student Voice: Community, Belonging and Literacy

Our Grade 8 Team of teachers led by Ms. Russell and Mr. Giesbrecht worked with our youngest students this year around learning routines and literacy across all subject areas. Grade 8 students were assessed throughout the year with a final survey completed in June.

Students were asked to identify areas of growth in areas of literacy, to set literacy goals and to share how teachers can further support students in achieving their learning objectives. As well, students had an opportunity to voice their preferences for Grade 8 elective choices and to comment on highlights and challenges of the school year. We want to know if these young people feel part of the Burnett community.

Students shared that they have improved in their paragraph writing and are setting goals for more sophisticated use of vocabulary in their written work; learners would appreciate more reminders and feedback from teachers. It was clearly noted that having a sense of belonging in school is due to the social connections. As we begin to set goals and make plans for the coming year, the perspective of students is invaluable as we listen to their voices and provide opportunities.
