Online Learning with Richmond Virtual School

Richmond Virtual School

Richmond Virtual School is the Richmond School District’s provider of kindergarten to grade 12 blended, online courses. Our classes are all full credit, Ministry of Education, courses that receive the same credits as a regular high school course. We have one of the highest completion rates in the province which we attribute to the fact that students have regular meetings with their teachers. These meetings allow students to make a connection with their teacher, receive instruction, write tests, complete labs, and ask questions. For more information about Richmond Virtual School please visit our website at richmondvirtualschool.ca. For a list of courses offered by Richmond Virtual School please click on the following link RVS courses

New Changes to Online Course Registration

As of May 6, 2022, School Districts may only enrol a student in online learning classes if the student resides within the school district’s geographic boundaries (ex. Richmond residents can no longer enrol in online schools outside of the Richmond School District).  Students who wish to take online courses will either need to register with Richmond Virtual School or with one of the Ministry approved, provincial online course providers. For more information, please click on the following links BC Ministry of Education - Online Learning and Overview of Changes – Online Learning

Richmond Virtual School Courses and Programs

Blended Online Courses (Grades 10 – 12)

The online courses offered by Richmond Virtual School have one of the highest completion rates in B.C. We attribute our students’ success to the fact that we have mandatory face-to-face meetings. They are held once per week for semester courses and once every two weeks for linear courses. These meetings allow students to connect with their teacher, receive instruction, complete labs, and undergo evaluation. Dance Program (Grades 10 – 12)

Richmond Virtual School offers dance courses that are open to students who are currently dancing at an accredited dance studio. This allows students who dance at least 100 hours per school year to receive credit for a high school dance course worth four course credits and students who dance 200 hours per school year can receive credit for 2 high school dance courses totalling eight course credits. Fast-Track Summer Program (Grades 10 – 12)

Richmond Virtual School’s Fast Track summer program runs for six weeks from the beginning of July to the middle of August. This program allows students to complete academic grade 10, 11 and 12 courses. Students are required to attend two classes each week in addition to the two to three hours per day they need to spend working at home. For this reason, we do not allow students to take more than two courses per summer. RAIL Program (Grades 8 – 10)

RAIL (Richmond Academy of Innovative Learning) is a project-based High School Academy modelled after High Tech High in San Diego. It is open to students who are creative, self-motivated and would like to complete grades 8 to 10 without the constraints of a regular High School. The RAIL students work in a classroom, but the courses are online, so they can work at their own pace. Students can use the tools and equipment in the District’s Makerspace to create projects that demonstrate their learning. Please click on the following link for more information: https://rvs.sd38.bc.ca/rail.

SKY Program (Grades 11 & 12)

The SKY program is a continuation of our RAIL program. In addition, students have two weeks of work experience where they have the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in their chosen field. They also take the Independent Directed Study course where they receive course credits for completing a project of their choosing that explores their preferred field of study. The SKY students work in a classroom, but the courses are online, so they can work at their own pace. Students can use the tools and equipment in the District’s Makerspace to build projects that demonstrate their learning. YELL (Grades 10 – 12)

YELL brings engaging entrepreneurs and innovative companies together through unforgettable learning experiences that will inspire students and prepare them for the real world. Students design a product and develop a marketing plan which they present in a “Dragon Den” like setting. The YELL program is offered outside of the regular timetable to students entering Grades 10 - 12 from all high schools in the Richmond school district. Please click on the following link for more information:  https://mycusthelp.ca/SD38/_cs/(S(kwcqddvxjved33eit1lmu4hd))/BusinessDisplay.aspx?sSessionID=7bcd3c&did=149
