Access to Learning for every learner
Schools are full of students with different abilities - some learn well through verbal instruction, some through visual, some through kinesthetic learning, and some students learn through a combination of multiple forms. Access to learning begins with learning spaces that are physically welcoming to support collaboration, access to technology, flexible seating, and personalized learning.
The learning strategies department at Burnett is focusing on increasing student access to learning through inclusive learning, increasing access to technology, access to adaptations to demonstrate learning, and building relationships to support learning.
One focus area this year has been to increase the reach of the learning services department into the classroom and to continue to transform where a student can access support from learning services. Learning strategies staff have focused on supporting staff in implementing adaptations that can be implemented in the classroom to create an equitable learning environment for all learners.
Actions:
- Purchased more student-use laptops and stationed laptops around the school for increased accessibility.
- Team-teacher in one English 10 class and one Math 9 class to support all learners
- Learning Services classes with multiple teachers and shared students
- School Based Team focus on adaptations to student learning
Goals for next year:
- Expanding opportunities to integrate student access to learning services throughout the school day.
- Increase awareness of access to adaptations to demonstrate learning.
