Literacy Focus: Grade 8 Reading Assessment

A reading assessment of Grade 8’s was completed in October to assess their literacy skills in the areas of making predictions, identifying main ideas and details, using word skills to decode vocabulary, making connections and providing a personal response.

It was noticed that learners struggled with making connections and responding personally. Moving forward, grade 8 teachers are working together to formulate strategies, like graphic organizers, to assist students in making connections.

A goal is to assist students in making connections to other subject areas by encouraging learners to understand the interrelatedness across curriculum. The starting point is having students access background knowledge.

Our Grade 8 Team of Teachers meet once a month. They will continue to collect data and make note of what they are noticing as successes and challenges for students. The team will also share strategies that have been used in classrooms and plan the next steps for students on their literacy journey of learning.
