Burnett's Learning Focus: Impact, Monitoring, Planning

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

Targeted lessons for literacy skills in Grade 8 (test features, summarizing, making connections). Strategies for Success Handouts (Reading Strategies) created and provided to students. Conference Days included topics about Citizenship and Organizational Strategies)

What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen?Based on the actions, observations and conversations with students and teachers, there is a need to address not only literacy skills as a key aspect of citizenship but also behaviours that are needed to show citizenship across the school community.
What does the evidence tell us so far?In follow-up literacy assessments many of the Grade 8 students are beginning to utilize the reading strategies that are helping to improve the ability to make meaning and connections when reading. While there is still some work to be done, the Citizenship Recognition and the publishing of students’ names who have contributed in positive ways around the school, is having a positive impact in enhancing the feeling of responsibility and community around the school.
To what extent are the actions making a difference? It is encouraging to see that direct instruction and the collaboration amongst subject area teachers are having a positive impact. Teachers are providing anecdotal evidence that students are continuing to grow and developing their literacy skills.
How will we move forward accordingly? We will continue universal, direct literacy instruction in Grade 8 and will also look to later grades to see whether students are continuing to improve on the skills developed in their beginning year. We will look to differentiate support for students who appear to be still struggling as more targeted supports may be needed. We will continue to provide literacy strategies for parents to engage with at home as a family. And, we will continue to utilize the Citizenship Tickets to encourage the growth and value of community.
