September Start Up Information

Dear Burnett Families,

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful long weekend!  We know many of you are eager to hear a few more updates to how our first week of school will be structured.

Our team has been in all weekend adjusting for cohorts and students leaving us for the RVS Remote option.  We are hoping to have our timetable ready for families to view in MyEducationBC on Wednesday, September 9th. Once the timetable is ready, we will send an email with instructions to login to view your schedule.

I would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of work completed by Mrs. Collins and Mr. Leung to rebuild our timetable to create Grade 8 and 9 cohorts and to maintain as many course selections made by our senior students in the Spring.  As many families may already know, most of the Elective and Modern Language courses at Burnett are offered as multi-graded options.  (Eg. Art Studio 9-12 is now Art Studio 9; Art Studio 10-12).  In order to run cohorts by grade, all multi-graded courses had to be split.  As this is the case, course changes will NOT be possible due to COVID-19 cohort restrictions.

I will be sending home an email on Wednesday and we will share more details about the process to be followed for any required corrections (Eg. gaps in a schedule or the repeat of a class that has already been completed).

There will be no students in the school on September 8 or 9.  We will be sending more detailed information on Wednesday regarding your homeroom assignment.  For now, I will share a few reminders and a few more school start up details.

This Orientation is VERY important as we will be reviewing Health and Safety Protocols.  We will also explain in more detail the new quarter schedule.

Monday, September 14 – November 18 (Quarter 1)

Grades 8 and 9 students will be attending school all day, every day in both their A and B block classes.  Grades 10-12 students will be attending each day, but only for half days (morning or afternoon) based on class grouping.

Grades 10-12 students will have to leave the school after their class; they will NOT be permitted to stay for lunch.  Also, Grade 10-12 students must maintain physical distance when in each of their classes.

Our timetable has been reformatted to fit this sequence:

Please note, as a requirement to maintain the 120-cohort size per grade, all of our Grade 8-12 multi-graded classes have been split.  Each elective choice in Grade 8 and 9 are now singleton blocks.  This also includes all Modern Language courses.  New course combinations have been created to best fit the timetable and maintain student requests.

ATTENDANCE

It is imperative we maintain correct and up-to-date attendance information.  We request that parents/guardians phone the school on our Early Warning line at 604-718-4007 if students are going to be away sick or will be late to school.  If a phone call is received, then a written excuse is not necessary. EACH ABSENCE OR LATE MUST BE CONFIRMED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN.

*NEW* STUDENT LUNCH DROP OFF

In accordance to district policy, we will no longer have a lunch table at the entrance of the school.  Parents may NOT drop off lunches inside of the school.  If you would like to bring your Grade 8 or 9 child a lunch, you MUST meet them outside of the school.  Parents welcome to enter the school only enter the building with a pre-schedule appointment.  Please call our office to book appointments (604) 668-6478.  Thank you for your understanding.

GENERAL FEES

An individualized fee statement will be sent home with each student later in September.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS

Students will NOT be issued lockers this year.  Please contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

SCHOOL FORMS

Students will receive two forms during Homeroom class.  Please complete these forms and return the forms to the school as soon as possible.

  1. Personal Information Release Form
  2.   Blue Medical Information

In case of an emergency we need to know who to call.  Any changes during the year should be given to the office staff.  Please make sure that any serious allergies are indicated on the form or you may call the office staff to provide any imperative information regarding your child’s health/safety.

STUDENT AGENDA BOOKS

All Grade 8 students will receive an agenda book.  This is a great source of information about our school expectations and policies.  Students are encouraged to record homework, marks, and upcoming due dates in their agenda.  We strongly recommend both students and parents read through the information at the front of the book to begin a successful year.

Digital agendas codes and information will be provided to Grades 9 – 12.  Please contact the office if your child requires a paper agenda.

I would like to thank our Breaker community for your patience and understanding.   We are grateful to start this year with such a caring and kind community.

We look forward to seeing your child this week!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wennie Walker

Principal
